Bible Reading Plan

Redemptive-Historical Bible Reading Plan

This year we are doing a 16 part plan that reveals God's plan of redemption in the Old Testament. Here is what the organizer says about it:

"I have outlined redemptive history in 16 stages, from creation up through the open-ended expectation of the Day of the Lord. Then I provide carefully curated sections from the OT that trace this history. I tried to pick at least one chapter from every OT book, but to keep it reasonably short I had to leave some out. I also pepper in psalms along the way. Then, for each stage, I provide a chapters from the NT that bring out how each of those steps of redemptive history (for ancient Israel) are fulfilled in the new era in Christ." Greg Laniers Blog

We will have three to five weeks to read and reflect on each part.

We will reflect on PART 12 for three weeks.

VBS helps Mexico church reach families of its community

After three years of not holding a Vacation Bible School (VBS) in person, the First Church of the Nazarene in Villaflores, Chiapas, Mexico, held a VBS titled Destination Dig from July 31 to August 5, attended by over 120 boys and girls from their community.

"We are aware that it is not just an event but an open door for our city to recognize Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord," said Yeri Nieto, youth pastor of the church.

Destination Dig was carried out with the support of a committed team of 70 collaborators, including musicians, cooks, and others as well as the director of VBS, Luz Balbuena, and her husband, Geovanni Gurgúa. Two months before the VBS, the team met to have times of prayer for each child. The church board and the director of children's ministries were very generous in providing everything necessary to care for the children.

"Ministering to children has become a priority in our congregation," Nieto said. "Many families in our city are going through economic problems, disintegration, and violence. But for one week, 100 children heard about the salvation and peace that only Jesus Christ brings, and many gave their lives to Jesus."

During the VBS, the team shared the stories of the missionary Mitchel Ramos Cruz (in Kenya, Africa). They prayed for him every day of the event and promoted a missionary offering. The offering was around US$175.

Nieto said that the congregation is praying that everything they do this year — as the church celebrates its 100th anniversary — proclaims Jesus Christ among all the families of Villaflores and that they are sure that the VBS is a way of entering each home with the living Word. The church is already thinking of opening more children's groups to continue the Christian formation of all children.

"This is a seed, the seed of the gospel," Nieto said. "And we truly believe that this seed has fallen on good soil. By doing this, we will not be surprised that God gives us the privilege of seeing new families [become] part of this spiritual family that wants to give glory to God."

Poor Sick Little Boy

Jimmy, a little boy, was in church one Sunday with his mother Linda, when he started feeling sick.

'Mummy,' he inquired, 'can we leave now?'

'No,' his mother replied, 'the service isn't over yet.'

'Well, I think I'm about to throw up.' Marty announced.

'Then go out of the front door and around to the back of the church and throw up behind a bush.' said Linda.

After about sixty seconds,Jimmy returned to his pew, alongside his mother

'Did you throw up?' Jimmy's Mum asked quietly.

'Yes,' Marty answered, embarrassed.

'How could you have gone all the way to the back of the church and returned so quickly?' Linda demanded.

'I didn't have to go out of the church, Mummy. They have a box next to the front door that says, "For the Sick".

When I grow up.

After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided to become a minister When I grow up."

"That's okay with us, but what made you decide that?"

"Well," said the little boy, "I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sit and listen."
